Home / Guides / How to Measure Your Inverter's Real Efficiency With One Fan and a Clock
Fully charge the battery, disconnect everything except one appliance of known wattage, and time how long it runs until cut-off. Efficiency = (Load watts x Hours run) / (Battery Ah x 12V). A 150Ah battery that ran a 60W fan for 10 hours delivered 600Wh out of 1800Wh nominal, an effective factor of 0.33 — a clear sign of a degraded battery, not a bad inverter alone.
This takes one evening and needs nothing but a fan and a clock.
Efficiency factor = (Load watts x Hours run) / (Battery Ah x 12V).
A healthy new tubular battery with a decent inverter typically measures 0.65-0.80. Between 0.45 and 0.60 means real degradation — check electrolyte level and terminals first. Below 0.40 the battery is usually near end of life, and no amount of inverter tuning will recover it.
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Battery capacity | 150Ah |
| Load | 60W fan |
| Hours run to cut-off | 10 hours |
| Theoretical energy | 150 x 12 = 1800Wh |
| Energy actually delivered | 60 x 10 = 600Wh |
| Measured factor | 600 / 1800 = 0.33 |
Efficiency is where battery age, electrolyte level, cable gauge, terminal corrosion and inverter condition all converge. Replacing an assumed 0.70 with a measured 0.45 does not just change a number — it changes the decision, from 'buy a bigger battery' to 'replace the battery you have'.
Fully charge the battery, run a single known load such as a 60W fan until the inverter cuts off, and divide the delivered energy by the battery's nominal energy. Efficiency = (Watts x Hours) / (Ah x 12V).
0.65-0.80 for a healthy new tubular battery and inverter. 0.45-0.60 indicates degradation worth investigating. Below 0.40 usually means the battery is near end of life.
A single full discharge to inverter cut-off is not harmful — inverters cut off well above the truly damaging voltage. Repeating it monthly would be, so run it once or twice a year at most.
Because the test measures the whole chain, not the inverter alone. Battery age and sulphation, low electrolyte, cable losses and corroded terminals are all folded into the single factor — and the battery usually dominates.
Yes, in one click. The efficiency estimator hands the value straight to the calculator through the URL, so your runtime estimates use your system instead of an assumption.
